At the beginning of 1947 in the Judean desert, Mohammed ed-Dib, a young Bedouin herdsman looking for one of his a sheep, discovered, on the banks of the Dead Sea, a cave containing rolls of leather wrapped in a linen cloth and placed in enclosed clay jars. The numerous archaeological searches that followed this event enabled the identification of eleven caves containing approximately 800 manuscripts in vary states of repair, copies of biblical books, commentaries on passages of the Old Testament, compendiums of regulations... This work tells the story of these searches and reveals their result and, on the basis of archaeological discoveries, describes the community of Qumran which amassed this library. A book written by a renown historian and archaeologist who took part in the Qumran excavation.
