This book explains how dreaming can profoundly change you by revealing information that your rational brain does not have access to. It discusses the view of neuroscientists on this altered state of consciousness, the way in which different civilisations and religions saw it as a divine message, and how artists such as Racine Gerard de Nerval and Verlaine described its mysteries. It answers the numerous questions that dreaming raises: Do only humans dream? Does it help us to live? What is its role in treating certain illnesses? How do dreams evolve throughout our lifetime?
In the second part of the book, the author discusses the other altered states of consciousness that allow communication between consciousness and unconsciousness, between the rational and the emotional world: the phenomena of collective trance, shamanic meditation, near death experiences, dissociation etc. Like dreaming, these altered states of consciousness help us heal our wounds. In Dr Patrick Lemoine’s view, some of these, such as trances, could be used to treat panic disorder or post-traumatic stress syndrome.
