In time immemorial, we inhabited places devoid of light. Then, in the era of megaliths, we allowed a ray of sunlight to break through on carefully selected dates: solstices and equinoxes for example. Each year, on a specific date, a ray of sunlight passes through a gap and illuminates the inside, as if to show us something. Since the Gothic era, the phenomenon has evolved: the sunlight no longer illuminates an object but depicts a stylised egg or heart which morph from one into the other... Why is this the case? This is what this work seeks to explain, firstly by presenting certain particular cases, then by proposing areas of research regarding sometimes unexpected developments. A thrilling subject, which is almost entirely unexplored in France
