This presentation of Notre-Dame d'Orcival (Puy de Dôme) evolves as it progresses and leads us from the dense to the subtle. The evocation of history provides us with a pristine vision of the past. The description of the architecture depicts matter taking form. Through the association with Mary, we set out in search of a pilgrim, the manifestation of conscious life. Study of the statue of Notre-Dame des Fers takes us from the material plain to that of symbolism. The Maestà becomes Sophia, or even the Soul, the link between the Spirit and matter. The capitals offer us their symbolic message. The architectural symbolism reflects the Spirit in its ordering of matter. Following the first six stages, we are ready for the initiatory pilgrimage to Orcival. The association of the words pilgrimage and initiatory could only bewilder those lost individuals who find themselves far from the path of Unity. Pilgrimages belong to religious traditions, while the initiatory approach relates to esoteric traditions. But is it not now time to reconcile the religious mind and the traditional quest? These two spiritual approaches are not mutually exclusive, in the sense that their adepts favour a spirit of understanding.
