Our body is formed of four elements: air, fire, earth and water, just the right proportion of which determines a balanced temperament. However, one of these elements always predominates, creating in each of us a a predominant temperament: fiery, irritable, nervous or lethargic. This work explores the characteristics of each of these temperaments, as depending on whether one is fiery or irritable, nervous or lethargic, one’s rhythm of life, eating habits, risk of illness, emotional reactions etc. are not the same. Furthermore, the influence on elements exerted by the cycles of life, the seasons or the environment, varies depending on one’s temperament. But the theory of the elements is not limited to a notion which we could label physico-chemical. It involves a spiritual dimension: in fact each element has a counterpart on the invisible plain, and therefore constitutes a positive force which we can embody and with which we can find harmony and communion. This subtle action of the elements thereby performs alchemical work which we transform within us and which drives us towards an ideal, or in other words balanced, temperament.
