This initiatory novel tells the story of two members of the Rose Cross, Zanoni and Mejnour. Mejnour chose the arid path of asceticism, while Zanoni opted for that of love. Whereas Mejnour remained impervious to the vain concerns of the world, the same could not be said of Zanoni: his encounter with Viola led him to consider sacrificing love for initiation. The conflicts and choices which occur in any spiritual quest are masterfully depicted, as are the difficulties the soul faces in the accomplishment of its ideal.
