50 alchemical fugues from the era of Rudolf II. The 50 alchemical fugues by Michael Maier, a German Rosicrucian doctor and alchemist, make up part of the work which he published in 1617, Atlanta Fleeing (Atalanta fugiens). In fact, this work successfully brings together engravings, verse and prose texts and musical compositions. The recording is made up of the 50 alchemical, three-part fugues. The first part represents Atlanta, who will only marry the person capable of beating her in a race. Hippomenes is one of her suitors. He has been given three golden apples by Aphrodite which he drops behind him as Atlanta overtakes him. He is represented by the second part. The third part represents the golden apple which slows Atlanta down in the race. These three parts symbolise the three principles of alchemical work: Mercury, Sulphur and Salt. They have musical accompaniment: the harp represents the Sun, the lute the moon, the trombone Mercury, the viola de gamba the Earth, the bagpipes Water, the flute Air and the cornet Fire.
