In 1909, Harvey Spencer Lewis, a young American with a passion for esotericism, mysticism and adventure, crossed the Atlantic on a journey to France, in search of his philosopher’s stone, his grail, his rose. His quest led him to Toulouse, where he came face to face with the Rose-Cross. Later he entitled his voyage: A Pilgrim’s Journey to the East. It is this text which makes up the first chapter of this book. It is followed by other writings such as Mystic Arts, Psychic Power, Free Souls, The Key to happiness. From 1915 to 1939 this exceptional, spiritual humanist was the international head of the Mystic Order of the Rose-Cross, carrying the traditional title of Imperator. Given the context of the beginnings of the 20th Century, you cannot help but notice how much of a modern and avant-garde thinker he was. His thoughts, style and achievements are remarkable. He was a true pioneer and managed to introduce a great many individuals, Rosicrucian or otherwise, to ideas that were both ancient and new, long before the so called “new age” movement.
