The epic poem of Gilgamesh is the most ancient literary work known to date. It relates the story of the world's first king, Gilgamesh, King of Uruk. A cruel man, he softens thanks to his encounter with Enkidou, who becomes his friend. Together they achieve different feats, but the gods have Enkidou die. Gilgamesh then begins to seek everlasting life, wishing to learn the secrets of life and death. He ends up accepting his mortal condition and discovers the keys of wisdom.
The epic poem of Gilgamesh is at the heart of all founding myths of Western thinking, offering in particular the first accounts of the Flood and the quest for immortality.
Stephen Mitchell perfectly reproduces the epic scale and philosophical depth of this poem, and unlocks its universal and timeless message.
