In this treaty, written in the 17th century, Yagyû Munenori unites sabre-holding techniques and philosophical questions on the art of combat, inviting the disciple to make his arm a source of life rather than an instrument of death. He shows that mastery of the sabre and self-fulfilment go hand in hand and require constant discipline, so that the mind may be freed both from the technique and the psychological obstacles and the very idea of vanquishing.
This treaty proposes an art of living: the advice that is given applies just as much to the art of the sabre as it does to politics and daily life.
