Michel Odoul analyses the effects of major temporal cycles on our lives, in particular on the occurrences of illness or accidents. When we are confronted with such sudden events, we often explain them as chance, destiny, genetic determinism.... But if we consider the moment when the event turned our life upside-down, we will find that it corresponds with an important stage of our development. This book demonstrates that illness and accidents coincide with cycles which constrain our lives, like tests along the path of life. If we do not hear their message, or do not know how to respond, we will create a tension which facilitates the occurrence of traumatic events. Drawing on traditional Chinese medicine and Greco-Roman mythology as well as Western science, Michel Odoul describes two types of cycle. Long cycles concern the major directions of existence, the fundamental archetypical questions which every one of us has to answer one day. By contrast, short cycles concern the phases which we must pass through in order to fully realize ourselves. This book enables us to become aware of who we are and what we experience. Putting words to the bad things allows us to give meaning to what happens and be able to heal fully.
