The Christian writings we refer to as “apocryphal” have been continually distributed, rewritten and adapted. They provided the breeding ground of the Christian imagination and a source of inspiration for sculptors, painters, writers, musicians and filmmakers. The texts brought together in the first volume are the legacy of Christian antiquity and intersect different biblical genres: Gospels (to which the writings detailing the life and dormition of Mary, the mother of Jesus, can be added), epistles Acts of the apostles, apocalypses (on the final days and the hereafter). These pieces are highly valuable. They offer deeper knowledge of the first days of the Church and the understanding of traditions - with regards to piety, liturgy and art - which we have been unable to trace in canonical texts.
