What is the meaning of “Meditate” in biblical texts? Using both the Kabbalah and the Talmud, Areyh Kaplan analyses different meditation methods used by the patriarchs and the prophets of Israel: repetition of words in the manner of a mantra, bodily postures, invocation of holy words etc. He also explores the great changes brought about by meditation: oblivion of self, ecstasy or rapture, awakening of the conscience, contemplation etc.
Meditation, as presented in the Bible, provides a new breath to life, leading to joy, the re-creation of self and the world. It enables one to enter more deeply into the divine Word, which can be understood by illumination alone, and not by intellect. By connecting humans with the spirit of God, it thus leads to prophecy.
