Originating in China, then introduced to Japan by Buddhist monks, origami, the traditional art of paper folding, was carried out during religious ceremonies in temples and used as offerings to the gods. It became widespread in Europe during the 18th century, where it became more of an artistic activity.
Akira Yoshizawa (1911 – 2005), considered to be the “grand master” of Japanese origami at the time of his death, spoke of the benefits of origami on the mind. He said, “when the hands are busy, the heart is serene”.
