A guide and an invitation on how to face the reality of trauma and explore the best ways of treating it.
How can we move beyond trauma and start living our lives again? Psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, a specialist in post-traumatic stress disorder, explains the repercussions that trauma may have on both the body and the emotions, and sets out the best ways to recover from it.
Trauma is an experience that is visible in the body. Using recent neuroscientific findings, this book shows that trauma changes the brain, altering the perception of danger and the ability to stay concentrated and listen to others. A person who has experienced trauma reacts to the painful memory by disconnecting themselves from their body and emotions. Difficulty in expressing their feelings and develop relationships of trust with others only serve to increase their isolation. So, it is essential to reconnect with oneself and one’s own story in order to find emotional balance, self-mastery and the joy of living.
Methods exist to heal the impact of trauma: cognitive behavioural therapy, therapies focussed on speech and writing, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Processing, Internal Family Systems, Pesso Boyden System Psychomotor and neurofeedback, as well as theatre and yoga. This book describes them in detail and gives many cases of healing. It also contains an entire section devoted to traumas experienced by children.
