In this book, Concerning the Spiritual in Art, and in Painting in Particular, Kandinsky exposes the notions that he considers essential in art, such as "inner necessity", and "colour". Art that relies uniquely on technique serves no purpose, he says. He wishes to reply to the fundamental questions: What should art be? Does it have an aim? What is the origin of the creation of a work? How can you judge a painting?
Throughout these reflections, he sharpens his personal conception: art should feed the soul of the viewer, raise him or her spiritually, and it is the artist who shows the way.
Kandinsky writes about painting, but he also knows how to take us to the shores of music, whose sounds directly touch the soul, just like the harmony of colours. There is, therefore, a profound relationship within the arts in general, and particularly between music and painting.
Kandinsky offers us a true philosophy of Art, correctly asserting that it should reach the soul by means of an "inner resonance".
