Without doubt the most famous French alchemist, Nicolas Flamel (who died in 1418) owes his renown and considerable wealth, to inexplicable origins, if not magic. It was in fact by discovering and deciphering a wonderful book, the Book of Abraham the Jew, that Flamel was to learn the secret of the philosopher’s stone. Yearning to pass on such a valuable secret, he is then believed to have penned a number of works, which include the founding texts of alchemy. The Philosophical Summary presents the key theories of Medieval alchemy, appropriately followed by the necessary practical section. The book of hieroglyphic figures reveals the secret teachings of the figures Flamel placed on the arches which, thanks to his considerable fortune, he had constructed in Paris, in the Cemetery of the Innocents. This edition, which is directly based on original texts, for the first time presents the entirety of Nicolas Flamel’s alchemical work, free of the minor texts which were often needlessly attributed to him, and which are merely latter translations of treatises by previous writers, drafted in Latin. An afterword summaries the latest findings of research on Flamel.
